Grazing in the Gardens of Paradise

Peace, one and all…

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: “‘If you walk through the gardens of Paradise, satiate yourselves!’ They asked him: ‘What are the gardens of Paradise?’ He said: ‘The circles of invocation.’”
(Quoted by al-Tirmidhi. Authenticated hadith)

Commentary

The principal image of this hadith is that of spiritual nourishment. It is known that amongst the delights of the gardens of Paradise, mentioned by the Qur’an, are the appetizing delicacies. Since the circles of invocation are compared to the gardens in Paradise, they must also nourish the invoker, satiating him and thus satisfying “the thirst and hunger” which characterize every veritable aspiration. Hence the use of the word rata’a, meaning feasting and eating well.

al-Munawi

“Satiate yourselves”: Eat as much as you want and seek the graces …’ “The circles of invocation”: According to Tayyibi,  they denote circles wherein God’s glory and praises are proclaimed. Dedication to the invocation has been compared to a feast because the most precious thing God can give to His servant in this world is the invocation, just as the most  precious gift of God in the Hereafter is the vision of His Face—exalted be He. Yet, the invocation of God in the here-below is comparable to the vision of the Face of God in the Hereafter. Thus, he who invokes God by the tongue with a present heart contemplates Him in the intimacy (sirr) of his heart and sees Him by his inner conscience (fu’ad): it is as if he received the delights of Paradise. Al-Nawawi has said: “Just as the  invocation is recommended, so is the company of the folk of the invocation, and there are many textual proofs (adilla) of this matter.”
(Fayd al-Qadir, hadith 859)
