Peace, one and all…
In verse 52 of Surah al-Naml we read the following passage:
‘So those, then, are their houses [lying] deserted because of the evil that they did…’ (Quran 27:52)
In his commentary on this verse, beloved Sahl al-Tustari said:
‘Their houses are an allusion to hearts; for there are hearts which are inhabited through remembrance, and there are those which are ruined through heedlessness. Whomsoever God, Mighty and Majestic is He, inspires with [His] remembrance, He has freed from oppression’.
An inhabited heart is one that remembers God, and is alive in God, to the point that God Himself takes up residence therein. When God resides in the heart, our inward and outward beings are transformed into light. We are enlightened. Enlightenment slowly frees us from unhealthy attachments and relationships with others. Our hearts are freed from oppression. As this poor one is discovering more and more, remembrance of God is the only effective path out of the darkness of our automatic behaviours. Remembrance heals. Remembrance restores.
