Ramadan Day 5: Real Humility

Peace, one and all…

Today’s selection from Ibn Ata’illah’s Hikam explores the nature of real humility.

Real humility is the one that arises
from the contemplation of His Sublimity
and the illumination of His Attribute

Hikam 240

Humility is often described as being like the earth, in this passage Ibn Ata’illah illustrates that true humility emerges from the contemplation of Divine majesty, and thus our utter insignificance.  To be truly humble, to be truly human, we must contemplate that which is infinitely greater than ourselves, we must contemplate the Divine.

  1. Contemplating the divine is always good advice and will almost always result in a sense of understanding our smallness yet significance from a divine perspective.
