Bismillah Your Old Self…

Peace, one and all…

Here’s another pearl from Mevlana’s great treasury.  Enjoy…

Ya Allah!  Draw me close to You.

Bismillah

It’s a habit of yours to walk slowly.
You hold a grudge for years.
With such heaviness, how can you be modest?
With such attachments, do you expect to arrive anywhere?

Be wide as the air to learn a secret.
Right now you’re equal portions clay
and water, thick mud.

Abraham learned how the sun and moon and the stars all set.
He said, No longer will I try to assign partners for God.

You are so weak. Give up to Grace.
The ocean takes care of each wave
till it gets to the shore.
You need more help than you know.
You’re trying to live your life in open scaffolding.
Say Bismillah, In the Name of God,
as the priest does with a knife when he offers an animal.

Bismillah your old self
to find your real name.

Ma’as salama,
Abdur Rahman

  1. There used to be a saying that Homer, Dante and Shakespeare divide the world of literature between them. A Western conceit. Surely Rumi gets a quarter share, or better.

Thank you, dear Bhai, for the lovely and, as always, true poem.

    Ya Haqq!

  2. Salaams dear bhai.

“Say Bismillah, In the Name of God,
as the priest does with a knife when he offers an animal.
    Bismillah your old self
    to find your real name.”

Ever went through the second verse of Sura Kauthar(108:2)?!

Maulana Rumi is waiting for you there!

  3. Asalam uleikum, brother.

Masha’Allah, Allah has willed it! This is just what I needed to read at this time. Jazak Allah khairyn, may Allah reward you and the brother who posted the verse from Surah al Kauthar. That got me thinking even more deeply about this deen and how it relates to my own path.

May Allah bless you and keep you both.
    Ibrahim

  4. I am a student studying Persian. I have looked everywhere for a translation of this in the original Farsi, but cannot find anything. Do you know where I could find this?
