in joyous, life-giving abandon.
Trees gather in readiness
and clothe themselves
in their finest robes of springtime green.
Life stirs within the earth’s deep heart;
cast off the coat of winter,
beloved spring is returning once more.

Peace, one and all…
To a drunkard,
this whole universe is a tavern
and each passing moment
a new festival of joy.
Each new person
is a heart to embrace,
and each new word
a toast to the delight of life.
Each bright day
is the grateful emptying of a new goblet
and each sacred night
a return to the tavern’s door.
To a drunkard,
all things taste of love
and all that exists
spins around the wine-giver’s throne.
Become a drunkard, dear heart.
Remember:
love is in eyes that shine,
and joy in ears that hear.

The blossom lives
but for the briefest of moments,
spending its whole self
in the space between heartbeats.
When spring comes,
is it ashamed to whirl and dance
in the Sun’s warmth,
for all its swiftly passing beauty?
If the delicate blossom can spend itself
with such reckless abandon,
why shouldn’t I?
Shouldn’t I blossom too in my turn?

O You Who respond to my every prayer,
those I whisper into the night’s secret heart
and those as yet unvoiced,
what is this life you have spread out before me?
You have placed Your mystery in this beating heart
and sent me forth in wonder
at this beautiful enigma,
where each path I take leads always to Your door.
Who am I that You should respond to me?
And yet…
here comes Your sweet breath of life
