Peace, one and all…
As I travelled home from work recently, I felt as though I was suddenly surrounded by a sea of faces. I was struck by the fact that faces come in all shapes and sizes and colours, as if I was brought face to face with raw human diversity. I was also struck by by an underlying unity. Although some faces seemed deadened by the business of the day, and others looked calm and relaxed, each pair of eyes spoke of depths just below the surface.
Each human face is a door, a gateway into a living, breathing world. Each human face is the outermost limits of an entire universe, simultaneously hidden from view and revealed in all its glory. Each eye is a window into the soul, that both receives light from the visible sun and also sheds forth its own inward light – as though within each heart moved another, invisible star.
This is why each human being is sacred. Just beneath the surface lies an entire world of possibilities, of meanings and truths. Each human soul is limited only by the power of its own inward imagination, by where it chooses to draw its own boundaries. The innermost self of a human being stands before the Infinity of God’s embrace. The heart opens out into forever and we are all honoured to possess such depth and breadth within our living chests.
Ma’as salama,
