The Simple Presence of Air and Sunlight

July 3, 2008

Peace, one and all…

What is hope, and what does it mean to be hopeful?  What do I mean when I say ‘I hope in God’?  What do I mean when I say ‘I hope things turn out okay’?  Is hope always a good thing?  Can it ever be bad to hope?

I do not know the answers to these questions (though do see this interesting conversation).  But, as I sit here looking at the sunshine just beyond my office window, I cannot help feeling hopeful.  I cannot help but feel reassured by the simple presence of air and sunlight.  I cannot help it.  The way the light dances amongst the branches convinces me that, for all its ups and downs, this crazy world shall not end in utter despair.  I cannot help but recognise the protecting hand of God, and a mighty hand it is too!

Even as we feel sorrow for all the hurts of this world, the sunshine falls upon our faces, like the tender caress of a mother comforting a distressed child.

Ma’as salama,
Abdur Rahman
