Bosnian Naqshbandi Nasheed
February 28, 2007 by Abdur Rahman
Peace, one and all…
As part of my ongoing series on Islamic music, I’d like to present this Bosnian Naqshbandi nasheed. I’ve worked with Bosnians in the past, and have a good Bosnian friend (and a Bosnian brother-in-law), so this reminds me of them.
Enjoy and may Allah make it beneficial.
Ma’as salama,
Abdur Rahman
sounds quite nice masaha’Allah… i would never have guessed it was naqsbandi nasheed!
thanks for sharing!
Salaams Safiyah bhaji
Al hamdu lillah, it’s a nice nasheed. Bosnian nasheeds have a very certain quality. I’ve known many brothers from the Balkans and I’ve found that, generally speaking, they have excellent singing voices, and a fine tradition of this kind of thing. Ma sha Allah!
One of my all time favourite nasheeds is an old fashioned Bosnian nasheed called ‘O Mumine Brate Moi’ (O My Muslim Brother). Unfortunately, I don’t have a copy, though I’d love one!
Ma’as salama,
Abdur Rahman
wasalaam akhi,
al-yawm ana bayna ‘bhen’ wa ‘bhaji’… i noticed!
just call me ‘ukhti’! haha..
‘O Mumine Brate Moi’ (O My Muslim Brother)… nice mash’Allah! Do u know where Bosnian Muslims originally go back to? Which Muslims had emigrated there to spread Islam? Would be so intersting to know more about Eastern European Islamic history… being the historian you are, i trust you may be able to help insha’Allah!
Shukran!
lol! Ukthi it is then
!
The history of Islam in eastern Europe in general and the Balkans in particular is both interesting and complex. This was one of the most contentious issues during the last decade or so, as Yugoslavia fell apart.
Islam in this part of Euorpe is almost entirely connected with the Ottoman Turks. Although they finally took Constantinople in 1453, the Byzantine empire had pretty much collapsed before then. This meant that they already had extensive European territories during the late 1300s (the ill-fated, from a Serbian point of view, Battle of Kosovo took place at approximately this time).
Bosnia was, I recall, conquered by Sultan Mehmet Fatih himself (Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih) in the 1450s (that date may be wrong). I also understand that there was a very high incidence of conversion amongst the native Bosnian population (though I could be wrong here).
An often cited reason is the existence of the so-called Bosnian Church. Essentially, during the middle ages Bosnia was renowned throughout Europe as a centre of heresy. Indeed, it was reputed to have been the home of the Bogomils, an apparently dualist sect, who may have been influential in the rise of the Cathars.
Some Bosnian Muslims are thus descendants of Turks, whilst others are ethnic slavs. The other Muslim peoples of the region are a wide mix of ethnic backgrounds. There are Albanians (in Albania proper, Kosovo, Macedonia), Bulgarians, Turkish speakers (in Macedonia, and parts of Greece). In fact, our most worthy brother Mesut Kurtis is Turkish and comes from Macedonia.
There are even a few Hungarian Muslims. In fact, I used to know one. A little further north, in places like the Ukraine, there are many ‘Tartars’ - that is, descendants of the Mongols.
See what happens when you ask me a history question: I go overboard!!! lol
Ma’as salama,
Abdur Rahman
lol.. masha’Allah… yes, i did for some reason think there was turkish influence in Eastern Europe.. maybe what i imagine there to be of the islamic architecture…
i quite like knowing about history and just how peoples migrated and settled to others lands and took their languaes and cultures with them…. however studying historys another thing!
There’s gonna be a lunar eclipse today..you know
Sheesh! Sometimes, I know what you mean. lol

Sufis, yes the most sensible men of this planet
Peace al leong,
Thank you for your kind comments. All that is good comes from God. Only the duff bits are mine.
But I thank you nonetheless and appreciate your comment.
I’m sure your own blog will grow over time. May Allah bless it and help it to grow.
Sufis are indeed amongst the most sensible men on the planet. Would that I could be one!!
Welcome to my internet home.
Abdur Rahman
Salam alaikum,
I love this nasheed!
Have you heard some of the other Bosnian singers such as Aziz Alili, Burhan Saban, and Hor Hazreti Hamza? They have some videos on youtube.
Do you by any chance know how I can get ahold of Hor Hazreti Hamza’s CD? I can’t find it on the net. They talk about it on their site but don’t seem to be selling it. I’m about to go nuts trying to find it!
[...] Last but not least, check out this beautiful Naqshbandi song about Ramadan, posted up on Abdur Rahman’s Corner. [...]
Wa alaikum salaam Musicalchef,
Welcome to my online home. Allah bless you.
My brother-in-law is from Bosnia and so I have heard some of his music, though I don’t know that much. Insha Allah, I will look out for the artists you name on YouTube.
Unfortunately, I don’t know how to get hold of the CD you refer to. Sorry!
Insha Allah, you will find it.
Salaams to you
Abdur Rahman
Thanks; I managed to get in touch with HHH and should be able to get the CDs insha’Allah

To be honest, I don’t know. Bosnian music is not a strongpoint of mine. Feel free to use anything from my site, at any time.
