Sufi Dancing from Omdurman, Sudan

February 17, 2007

Peace, one and all…

As part of my teaching commitments, I’m going to be posting some material relating to Sufi music, dancing, etc.  This first offering comes from Omdurman, in the Sudan.

At this stage, I make no comments regarding my own opinons.  I’ll reflect on my thoughts and possibly (by God’s grace) post something on this topic later on.

Ma’as salama,
Abdur Rahman

hmm… indeed very interesting… certainly something i myself would like to know more about insha’Allah… What are your thoughts?

Omdurman… Ahmad Thompson travels there on his way to Hajj. His book ‘The Difficult Journey’- a must read insha’Allah! It was gifted to me by a friend and i had the pleasure to gift it to another. Learnt quite alot from it, alhamdulillah, and realised that i really enjoy reading this style of writing. The second part is ‘The Way Back’, which is equally exciting to read! :)

    Salaams Safiyah,

I’ve never read Ahmad Thompson’s book. I enjoy travel writing and so insha Allah, I’ll keep an eye out for it. I must confess, though, that I didn’t particularly enjoy his book on the Dajjal -I found it hard to read.

I’m going to collect my thoughts and post something on this soon, insha Allah.

    Abdur Rahman bhai

    La shukr ala wajib akhi!

Brother, it won’t play for me, just says something about accepting the sender’s friend request. I got quite excited when I saw the title of the post as I have just been posting videos of William Dalrymple’s Channel 4 documentary “Sufi Soul”. It’s divided into 5 parts and focuses on the music, singing, and dancing of Sufis in Turkey, Pakistan, America, all around the world. As one Sufi master says about the turning, ‘This is not dance, it is prayer’. However I haven’t seen your video from Sudan yet, any tips as to how I get it to play?

    Salams Yafiah,

    That’s strange! Allah!

When I first posted it worked fine. Now, I’m getting the same message as you! Perhaps you might try searching for it directly on You Tube? Or, if you’re a member of You Tube, adding the owner as a friend might help?
